Lesbian nightlife in Bangkok has been diminished by the closing of a couple of great bars, most notably Zeta, and E-Fun. But the scene isn’t entirely dependent on just certain places. The fact is, Thailand is such a free and open nation towards the LGBT community that anywhere you want to sit and the party is really no problem. Gay Bangkok has a really vibrant identity with the main area of Silom Soi 2-4, and Lesbian travellers are certainly welcome there, but it is never the less more comfortable to go someplace exclusive to the lesbian community so as to meet people and have a wonderful shared experience with all around you.
Nowadays it is the monthly parties that make the Lesbian scene in BKK special. Lesla is the favourite for “Tom’s and Dee’s”- the Thai terms identifying the masculine/feminine roles. Thai lesbian culture is somewhat more structured than in the west- odd for such an overall free and tolerant societal atmosphere, but true, so don’t be surprised that partners seem so opposite. This party has a very Thai clientele, mostly local, but they are wildly friendly towards foreign visitors and welcome all to a very good time. Being able to speak “nit noi” Thai, or “just a little” will really help!
The vibe and Go Grrls are two other great Lesbian parties that are also on a variable, roughly monthly, schedule and sometimes change venues. Go Grrrls is pretty well grounded at Wine Bibber Sangria on Ekkamai Soi 2 (BTS Ekkamai), and Vibe is often housed at X2Silom, but the parties do occasionally shift, so check the Facebook pages is the best way to plan anything.
Maggie Choos is the closest thing to fixed location Lesbian bar. It is also a very cool spot in and of itself- the place was a former bank vault in the basement of what is now the Novotel Fenix hotel, and has that speakeasy kind of feel. Many little passageways and small sitting areas also give it the feel of a 19th-century opium den. Open from 7:30 PM to 2 AM, there are entertaining shows on different (variable) nights, and this is what tends to bring in the male gay crowd.
