A long-time favourite Silom gay nightspot is The Balcony Bar. Equally well covered in other reviews and press as DJ Station and Telephone Bar, it must be included in our first reviews because like those, to not do so would be to hold back good information for first-time visitors to TheBearTravel.lgbt. It is much loved by customers because It’s cheap.
Balcony advertises itself as the cheapest bar in Bangkok. While that might not be entirely true, it is better priced than others in the Silom area and the happy hours are certainly the best- you can hardly buy a beer in a store for the price! The other thing is that it is pretty much the biggest of the spots around in this area, and by extension, the crowd is much more interesting. There is a nice mix of regulars, LGBT tourist visitors, and the curious that are not gay but revel in the freedom to mix in the fun.
As at Telephone Bar, people-watching is the thing, and what makes Balcony so cool is, well, the Balconies. There are two big terraces, one on each side of the street (I said it’s a big bar) and from up there, the street view is just great. Inside is a throwback to another era with its long circular bar. You can chat up the bartenders when it’s not too busy before 9 PM, and the conversations with the other customers have that intimate feel of talking to a fellow adventurer, sharing stories and drinks and just getting along together. Cabaret nights are supreme with a lot of raunchy humor and well-done musical show performances in lavish costumes.
